How do I register my child for group IEW classes or private writing tutoring?
You fill out the form under "Contact Me" and I will get in touch with you to answer any questions you may have and, if you are doing private tutoring, set an appointment for a free initial consultation.

Where are group IEW classes offered?
Classes are currently being held in Peoria and Anthem. Classes for the 2012-2013 school year are forming now. I will be teaching three in the East Valley on Mondays, two in another location on Wednesdays, and two in Anthem on Thursdays.
What group IEW classes are you offering?
"Fables, Myths and Fairy Tales". Students will learn the structural and stylistic techniques of IEW utilizing excerpts from well-known fables, myths and fairy tales. Students will learn note-taking, how to summarize narratives, how to summarize references, writing from pictures, and how to compose their own fables, myths, and fairy tales. This class is ideal for grades 3-6.
"Bible-Based Writing Lessons". Students will learn the structural and stylistic techniques of IEW utilizing Bible texts, stories and themes. This class is ideal for grades 4-12, with style checklists available at three different levels of complexity.
New classes will also be offered in the 2012-2013 school year. Updates will be posted soon.
How are group classes structured?
Each class is one hour long. There will be 5-12 students in each class, thereby keeping the group large enough to brainstrom together and build on each other's ideas, but small enough for each student to get the individual attention I want to provide. Classes start promptly, and we will not wait for latecomers. We will spend as much time on instruction as that particular class of children needs, and then we will move on to the assignments. We will move through the unit material as quickly as that particular class of children is capable of going, so I cannot tell parents how many units we will end up covering during the four-week session. Schools will often spend 4-6 weeks on any given unit. We will spend the final 5-10 minutes of class time answering questions and packing up. If you, as a parent, have questions about your child's writing, you will need to make arrangements to discuss them with me apart from class time.
Why should I enroll my child in a group class rather than teach him/her myself by him/herself, or have you do private tutoring with him/her?
The primary benefit to having your child in a small class setting is that he/she will learn from the other students. When there is more than one or two students working on the same material, the students can brainstorm together and build off of each other's excitement and ideas.
What will my student get for my money?
Each 4-week session is $70 for the first child, $60 for the second child from the same family, and $50 for any additional children thereafter from the same family. In the group class setting, your child will get instruction time from an accredited instructor, assignments that are tailored to his/her individual level of comfort and skill writing, feedback on their writing, and paper grading (using an IEW checklist). IEW has recently updated their copywrite policy, so in some classes, students will be required to purchase their own student workbooks. In others, as a teacher, I may distribute copies of the student workbook to the students enrolled in my class. Per IEW's regulations, I am not permitted to teach TWSS to parents.
What are your payment policies?
Payment for each 4-week session is due one week prior to the start of the session. Students who have not paid will not be allowed to participate in the class.
What are your cancellation/no show policies?
If I must cancel a class for any reason, then I will offer a make-up class or I will pro-rate the session and offer a refund for that class period. Which option I choose will be determined by the availability of a date for a make-up class and the availability of the students to attend a make-up class.
If a student must miss a class, unfortunately I cannot offer any make-up dates or refunds. I am able to offer classes at a significantly reduced tuition from the cost of private instruction or tutoring based on the commitment of the parents to have their students attend. I will make sure your child receives the hand-outs and the assignments from the class period missed.
.How do I set up private tutoring for writing?
You fill out the form under "Contact Me" and I will get in touch with you to answer any questions you may have and set an appointment for a free initial
consultation.
What is involved with an initial consultation?
At an initial consultation, I will: introduce myself, answer any questions you may have about me or what I do, get basic information about you and your student, find out what your needs and goals are for your student, discuss your student's strengths and weaknesses as a learner, get your permission to talk to your student's teachers, go over payment and cancellation policies, and cover when you can expect updates.
How is a private tutoring session for writing structured?
How I structure private IEW instruction is largely determined by the age and skill level of the student. Unlike my reading tutoring and homework help where I will be using materials and homework from your student's schoolwork, I will be using TWSS materials for private writing instruction. Rather than taking it one school assignment at a time and struggling through it, I will be systematically teaching your student the skills he or she will need to master in order to
become a competent, effective writer. While I may be able to work some with existing writing assignments from school, this will largely be work above and
beyond your student's regular schoolwork. Please see "Why IEW?" for information about what your student will be learning from me.
How will I know how my student is progressing?
At the end of each session, I will give your student a hand-out recapping what we did and what he or she needs to do before the next session, so that you can review it. Once a month, we will take the final 15 minutes of one tutoring session for a "parent-tutor conference", where we can address concerns, go over progress, and make any necessary adjustments to our goals or teaching methods.
What is your payment policy?
Just like with my classes, I schedule tutoring and private instruction in 4-week sessions. How many times we meet per week is determined by your needs and my availability. Spaces are limited. I require payment (cash, cashier's check, personal check or money order only) by the 1st of the month.
What is your cancellation/no show policy?
If I must cancel a private session for any reason, I will either refund your money for that session, or we will find a mutually agreed upon time to reschedule the session.
If you must cancel a private session for any reason, I require 24 hours of notice. At that point, I will either refund your money for that session, or we will find a mutually agreed upon time to reschedule the session. If you do not give me the full 24 hours of notice or your child simply no-shows, no refund or reschedule will be given. If there is a second no-show, you will be dropped as a client.
